OpenAI has introduced GPT Live, a new speech model for ChatGPT that enables more realistic, real-time talks with the AI. Starting today, the model will become the default speech model for paying ChatGPT customers, with a lighter variant accessible for free users.
GPT Live is designed on a full-duplex architecture, which allows it to listen and talk simultaneously rather than waiting for users to complete speaking before answering. According to the ChatGPT parent, this allows for smoother back-and-forth talks, better management of interruptions, natural pauses, and real-time translation.
GPT Live may also answer to chats with brief acknowledgements like “mhmm” or “yeah” or keep silent when users need to contemplate.
For inquiries that need online searches, deeper reasoning, or more difficult activities, GPT Live may route requests to OpenAI’s most recent frontier model in the background and continue the chat while the request is handled. At debut, GPT Live’s underlying model is GPT 5.5, with future upgrades anticipated when more frontier models become available.
According to OpenAI, the new model also enables an upgraded ChatGPT Voice experience, which includes faster turn-taking, better management of background noise, graphic response cards for themes like as weather, sports, and stocks, and the ability to select different reasoning levels for responses.
According to the firm, over 150 million individuals utilize ChatGPT’s Voice and Dictation services every week.
GPT Live 1 will become the default voice model for ChatGPT Go, Plus, and Pro members, with GPT Live 1 small being the default for free users. The distribution includes both the mobile and web versions of ChatGPT.
OpenAI also intends to make GPT Live available via its API in the future, allowing developers and corporate customers to sign up for notifications.
