Metz left OpenAI in 2024 to join Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines, but returned early this year. He is now scheduled to begin his duties at Meta this week.

Meta has hired AI researcher Luke Metz for its Superintelligence Labs, marking yet another high-profile move in the technology industry’s increasingly competitive hunt for artificial intelligence expertise.

Metz joins Meta following a series of movements between AI businesses. He left OpenAI in 2024 to join Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines, but returned earlier this year. He is now scheduled to begin his duties at Meta this week.

At Meta, Metz will report to Alexandr Wang, who leads the company’s artificial intelligence efforts. The company has accelerated its push to develop advanced AI systems and has introduced several new models in recent months.

The hire comes as Meta expands its Superintelligence Labs. The firm has made huge investments in its AI goals, including a multibillion-dollar agreement with Scale AI, which brought Wang, the company’s previous CEO, to Meta.

The new hiring highlights Meta’s larger push to engage experienced researchers as competition among big technology companies heats up for the creation of more powerful AI models.
