WhatsApp has introduced guest calling, which allows those without WhatsApp accounts to join audio and video calls via a link. The functionality enables free, end-to-end encrypted calls with no time limit.
Before joining, guests must first gain consent from the call host. They will enter a waiting room until admitted and may be removed from the call at any time. Guests are unable to view the phone numbers of other participants, send messages, or directly add individuals to the call.
To make a guest call, go to the Calls page, click the ‘+’ symbol, and create a call link to share with participants. Following the host’s confirmation, guests can open the link in a computer browser, enter their name, and participate in one-on-one or group calls with up to 32 people.
Guests can also use in-call capabilities like computer screen sharing, emoji reactions, and the option to raise their hand.
The platform intends to add calendar interfaces later this year, allowing users to make calls directly from Google Calendar or Outlook. Users will be able to install the WhatsApp plugin, connect their accounts, and include a call link in calendar invitations. Whether or whether they have a WhatsApp account, invitees can join calls.
The guest calling capability and future calendar integrations follow previous calling upgrades launched by the platform this year.
