Indian Express Group Partners with OpenAI to Bring News Content to ChatGPT

Select summaries or excerpts from Express Group publications may be used in ChatGPT answers, with source attribution and direct links to the original articles for readers.

The Indian Express Group and OpenAI have launched a cooperation to increase the discovery of the Group’s journalism using ChatGPT.

Under the agreement, selected summaries or snippets from participating Express Group articles may appear in the AI chatbot’s replies to pertinent inquiries. The findings will identify the source and provide direct links to the original articles.

The inaugural agreement will feature material from The Indian Express, The Financial Express, and the Group’s business periodicals. It will feature live and archival material in seven languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, and Gujarati.

Nandagopal Rajan, CEO of Indian Express Digital, commented on the alliance,“Our legacy of agenda-setting investigations, news breaks and a breadth of voices that cut across the political spectrum makes the Express Group unique in Indian media. We have always been open to new technologies, and this partnership creates a new way for readers to discover the work of our large national network of journalists and their rigorous reporting with clear attribution and a direct path to the original source. As technology changes how people find and consume information, our priority remains credible journalism, with full editorial responsibility for everything we publish.”

Varun Shetty, Vice President – Media Partnerships, OpenAI, added, “The Indian Express has an extraordinary tradition of in-depth investigations and unbiased reporting that helps people understand India in all its depth and complexity. We want AI to help more people discover that work, with clear attribution and direct links, reflecting our commitment to working constructively with publishers and developing technology that supports journalists, readers, and a strong news ecosystem.”

The newspaper will continue to have autonomous editorial authority over its work, according to the organization. The AI business will not decide which stories the Group publishes, how they are created, or the editorial judgments reached.

The two organizations will also investigate the usage of OpenAI technologies for reader experiences and processes throughout the Group. The following areas are being considered: archive discovery, research, data analysis, translation, reader services, and business operations. Any editorial use of the technology will be subject to Group policies and human control.

The agreement is part of OpenAI’s larger effort to enhance news discovery and investigate AI uses in publishing.
